I present to you a special episode of “My Mother's Beliefs Amuse Me” series.
Myself:
There were patches of ants in my house today. There were crawling from the doorway to the dinning area. I had no idea where those came from. We were rushing off, so I could not do anything about it. When we returned, the ants were gone. Just like that!
Anyway, I mopped those areas slightly. I will bring the maid tomorrow and get the whole house mopped to check if something is spilled of dead.
Mother:
Is it black ants?
Myself:
Yes. Small tiny black ants
Mother:
Maybe it is the ‘baby’ ants
Myself:
What are ‘baby’ ants? How do you know if they are baby???
Mother:
When the maid was cleaning your house in India, she saw patches of these ants. We went to investigate and then she told us that those ants only infest if the owner of the house is pregnant. It will go away when the baby is born, so it is bad to wash (kill) them.
Myself (giving my mother the “wadde!” look):
So, you did not wash those ants away? You leave the house to be infested with ants?!
Mother:
Yes. It will go away when you deliver, so nothing to worry.
Myself (in my ‘OMG I cannot believe this’ high pitch tone):
Umma! Are you telling me that a colony of ants in the Southern part of India know that I am pregnant? And, they decided to stay till I delivery my baby?!
Mother:
Yes. You will not understand. Just listen to elders and be quiet.
Myself (speechless):
!!!???
My Sister (in giggles):
We can save on phone calls to India when you deliver then. Once the ants disappear they will know!

Hahhahahaa!!
And.. I hope the ants are gone by now :P
Haha!
This is funny, loved reading it. All this homely myths are common in India. Surprisingly its common among muslims as well, when the very "Kalima" that we read and understand to become muslims, make it clear to us no one can do anything to us, no harm, no benefit, until Allah wishes the same for us.
